Good thread guys!!! We're planning on making a similar machine but we are going to use our tractors as power supply.....
I guess the easiest would be to hook it up to the tractors hydraulic system, woulden't it?
any feedback on this guys?

Our home-made one is for the back for the tractor. As you say, it just links up to the tractors hydraulics. Ours is simply a large I-beam for the upright with a much smaller one horizontally for the linkages. Then it's just somewhere to put the top link pin through, a sheet of, I don't know, 3/4" ish plate on the bottom, a bit of 6mm round one side to stand behind and the ram. The knife looks just like Sam's. Just make sure the welds at the top are good and strong, unlike my father's attempts!!!

Before everyone cuts all their arms and legs off here's a neat safe version - It's a threaded cone with a sharp point. Just jab the log in grain on and the log gets pulled in and split apart. Really quick.

Ah yes. I've heard of those but never used one. Are they any good? How do they handle wet wood?

I've never used it - belongs to a tree surgeon who used the field next door. Splitter seems pretty efficient, though they do tend to pile logs up and leave them for a while so maybe it's better on dry wood.

Your want a spool block tho sparks, So you can externaly operate it, I beam and an off cut of hardox bucket edge would be ideal for your blade..

I've slapped a couple of photos of our home made efforts in my albums. Not, I'm afraid, nearly as smart as Sam's (especially since the ram is slightly bent!).

As you can see, it's fairly agricultural! Sorry about the photos. I couldn't be bothered to hitch it up and move it out of the corner.

P.S I'm afraid I can't take credit for the welds. Can't remember who did them. Either an old duffer called Frank (who's since shuffled off his mortal coil) or another called Eric who fled the county never to be seen again! Done on an old arc welder though.
