it works on old codgers door key locksi thought you could do it with a thin bit of paper in the slots and feel for the drop and record the numbers, then try the in the 10 available positions, mind you i do read this stuff late at night

i value time over cost to a certain degree...if its not that expensive and its quicker for me to pop out and get one, i will rather than potentially spending hours trying to crack the combination and potentially failing. if it cant be easilly shimmed i generally dont bother anymore
Try clamping one end of the lock in the soft jaws of a vice, and try again with applying tension to the other end. Clamping one end reduces the degrees of freedom of movement of the whole assembly, making it easier to spot when the correct digit has been found. As the rotating rings are moved, note any changes in rotational stiffness, and if/when sideways movement of the rings, or the other end of the lock, is possible. There seems to be a gap to the left of the first ring. Try rotating that ring with slight leftwards tension on the ring. Also, try repeating the process with the rings in different starting positions (e.g. 0000, 1111, 2222, 3333, and so on). There should be no more than four occasions, during that process, when at least one of the rings will be in the correct position, which should make it easier to find the remainder.

id sit in front of the tv and do it ,,, half an hour at worst ,,,, then again I do a rubric cube every morning , just to keep me focused on my toast

maybe you have a more upmarket bunch of theives, but i dont know anyone in that game that would even attempt to learn to pick or decode a lock for fear of being called gay...or be accused of being a fed...then again the criminals round here boast about their acheivements on facebook so theres that i suppose

I have a key lockbox I forgot the number to, got up to a few hundred then gave up on that idea, used card down the side of each digit to feel where the notch is then turn each number 5 clicks so the notch is at the rear.Worked well.
