Hello all,

I have been googling for some data of safe working loads of RHS and RSJs without a lot of luck. Google always gives leads to companies that sell the material and finding the information I'm looking for has not been successful.

I would very much appreciate if someone who knows of such a source of information would post it here?

I am a Structural Engineer and as with all loadings on beams its not such a cut and dry procedure to calculate what a beam can take.

What is the application of the beam? What are the loadings? Dead or Live? Are they offset? Where on the beam are they? Do you have UDLs or Point loads? What is the beam to bear on? How is it to held in position? What are the foundations like that the beam is to bear on? If its to be on a new bearing what foundation sizes do you require?

The list goes on.

Give me some info and Ill help you but without seeing the project I couldn't be responsible for the out come.

BTW superbeam is a very good program but its what is called an expert program. In other words you need to be an expert in the field to be able to use it properly. Also the program is limited to what you can do in the trail version.

I appreciate the offer.

Basically we want to erect a room 5 M span by 9 M length using 100mm composite panels. Conventionally these would sit on Z purlins. However, as the reasons for selecting the panels are a clean smooth inner surface and speed of erection; the Z purlins are a dirt trap and I was hoping to use RHS instead so as to keep the smoothness of the interior. They will sit on top of steel columns which in turn are on an 8" concrete base.

The panels weigh 12.5 Kg per square Metre so the roof itself is light., and the maximum height is also fairly low at 3.5Metres. I understand that the span of the purlins will be no more than 2 Metres but would prefer to extend that if possible, again to minimise any interior projections.

I think a drawing (however sketchy) would help.

But from what you've said:

1) a stand alone room (ie garage or similar) forming a box 9 x 5 x 3.5m

2) the columns would be 3.5 high holding the roof made from panels @ 12.5kg/m2

Some questions come to mind.

1) Walls would be of the same panels so would not exert a force (beside wind loading) on the structure

2) maximum span of purlins 2m. How can this be with a oblong room?

3) Are you going to have a pitch to the roof?

4) What size are the panels, do you need intermediate stretchers for the panels (mini beams) ? Just give me a make and model number on these would be easier.

5) Is this room built or are you constructing the whole unit?

Ill leave off with more questions until I figure out exactly what your trying to construct.
