I’m a linux noob, a week into it.

I can move around in terminal, copy stuff and the likes. I’ve tried to install Arduino Uno which I’ve done. I can load it and it runs.

I’ve created a shortcut in terminal that sits on the desktop, when you click it it opens.

I can’t pin arduino to the dock, no option. Spent close to 2.5 hours, reading forums, watching youtube and can’t for the life of me get the option to pin to the dock.

Right click gives me no option. The working shortcut is highlighted bottom right.


This is the wording in the desktop file. The icon path is like it is because I can’t copy the icon.png to the icon directory but that’s another issue!

I think I had the same issue with OpenShot. It's an Appimage, so all self contained in one file. I ended up with the icon on the desktop.
That was in Ubuntu on a Dell laptop. On my desktop machine, running CachyOS with a Plasma desktop it's no problem.

Changing the OS is a bit drastic to get an icon in the dock though...

Does the program you are trying to add to the dock show up in the main menu? I'm running Mint and right clicking a menu item gives me the option of adding to the panel or the desktop. Not used Ubuntu for a while but seeing as Mint is based on it, just a thought.

Is it an appimage or have you installed with apt? Or even Snap or Flat pack?

Does the program you are trying to add to the dock show up in the main menu? I'm running Mint and right clicking a menu item gives me the option of adding to the panel or the desktop. Not used Ubuntu for a while but seeing as Mint is based on it, just a thought.

That’s sorted it and it’s pinned to the dock, can’t believe how much time I’ve wasted googling and trying to do that in terminal and trying all sorts of other things and it was that simple

It’s not sorted the icon image it just has the gear symbol but I’m not as fussed about that.

There a script error that keeps popping up now so not sure it has installed well and there’s another issue now.

It’s an appimage I downloaded, I used flatpack2 to install it (i think).

It keeps popping up multiple errors now, usually when trying to close it.

I’ve managed to pin it to the dock now thanks to mouldyoldtoastbag above but the icon still doesn’t work.

I might try and remove the whole thing and start again with a fresh install of Arduino.

The arduino app pinned to the dock doesn’t do anything I’ve found, still needs to be opened via the desktop file I made for it to open.

I’m going to start uninstalling it and starting from scratch again and see if that sorts it.

If it's an appimage it doesn't need installing. Just make it have execute permission. You can run it from the terminal or straight from the desktop. If you want an icon, extract the contents of the appimage and find the icon in there, if there is one..

I’ve removed and redownloaded the appimage, moved it to the desktop, altered the permissions. It now doesn’t run by double clicking, I have to right click and then click run as program and it opens.

I’m going to leave it at that I think, I can open and use it and I know where the appimage is so that’ll do me.

Is there not an apt for it?

There is for the older version from what I’ve read but not the new version 2.
