Line boring

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of line boring? I have been asked a few times this year if i do it due to doing more and more work for demo and plant firms so am considering looking into it in the new year. Are there firms that offer demonstrations on equipment and what kinds of variations are there to suit varied jobs?

Doesn't seem to be as popular as in the states. Weldingweb is a good forum to ask a question like this as there are plenty of guys using this stuff in the field.

Phil weeks of Phil Weeks welding (Bath) has supplied inverter mig machines that ended up on line boring machines - perhaps give him a bell and ask if he knows any makers of those machines?

As i'm sure you're aware there isn't much to them, simply a ratio of rotation speed to track movement inside the bore (this is for the welding bit). You then cobble up the brackets to hold it vertical.

The boring bit will be a modified mag drill with a boring head and auto feed. You could make most of this stuff.

there's line boring and line boring, putting a boring head on a mag drill is boring, not line boring. For instance if you need to bore the two holes in a bucket so that it's true and in line you need a boring bar that will pass through both holes at the same time and then needs to be set up true. I'm not saying that you couldn't use a mag drill to power the boring bar but the essential part is a bar that passes through all the holes that need to be bored in line and supported at both extreme ends.

Have a look at some of Tino's posts where he/they fab buckets and then bore them. You might pick up a name from the machine.

You can fab up a self-feeding line bore for re-doing pivot holes quite easily and even run it off a small petrol engine with some innovation. I'll see if I can find the article I saw showing one off.

@piman i have a mag drill and have done a few small jobs boring out holes with it but i am on about as you say, the operation of boring buckets for new pins and bosses. I have seen vidoes on line so will go down the route of what others have mentioned for a manufacturer and see if i can get a demo and prices.

Nice find digger, really interesting. I have about 4 VW cases to line bore which i could send away but I have been toying with making my own line boring kit. Younused to be able to buy them really cheaply (Porta tool and the like) but now they fetch over a grand.

Always fancied making my own as i have most of the machinery and this has given me some ideas.
