Lincoln sp170t wire feed problem

This welder won't feed wire, though the fan is running, the trigger is clicking, but the reel spindle won't turn. I did notice that the cables inside machine were reversed in the position for fluxed wire rather than solid wire with gas, after I had welded a bit. I put the cables at their correct positions for mig welding. removed the welding wire, and still the spindle won't turn. Also the circuit breaker reset button doesn't click in or out (just flops in and out) I had welded a bit, but then it wouldn't feed...someone please give me some insight, as well as tips how to repair this machine! Welcome RSOC (to lazy to type rest) Having read throught your post the fact that your welder was working ok up untill you swaped the wires for gas/nogas I would assume that you have mabe knocked the wire/s off the wire feed motor. or one of it's leads. Worth a close look allround the area you had to work on to swap leads. Failing that a good pic/s of that area may allow one of us to spot what may have come addrift

I have posted this reply before for another member, My 170 did exactly the same as yours and it turned out to be a poorly soldered wire on the feed motor had come adrift completely, Re soldered properly and been working well ever since,

As per Gordon's advice, mine was doing very similar. I stripped out the drive roll assembly to get at the gearbox and motor (its a pig to get at from either side) and the conncetions were not well made!

As it happened this wasn't my problem.......

After getting a local engineer to come out it turned out the voltage switch (rotary switch A-E) was not making a good contact. I had changed voltage when I had gone from butt to puddle welding.

He flicked it back and forth a few times and the drive roll sprang into life

Took it apart and gave it a clean for good measure and it has been perfect ever since

if your 170 i slime my 135 look at the feed roller to confirm you have the wire on the right groove. Inside panel of my welder shows which groove to use for what wire diameter. if you need to change it, undo the set screw pull the roller out, reverse ends and put back in place.
