Lincoln Minimig 180c problems!

Hi there!

I have just been given an old Lincoln Minimig 180c "snapon" branded on the side.

Basically it was used last 4 months ago and the wire was getting stuck, so they left it.

I have taken it off them, with plans to replace the liner in the torch to get the wire running through it again...

BUT

Now when I plug the welder in, nothing what so ever happens.
Ive checked the socket I'm using, checked the plug, the fuse, the wire to the welder...

Havent got any other clue about welders electronics so dont wanna go around poking things until I know what does what

Are there any fuses/relays inside it which can affect the power to the unit??

paul, if this is an arcos lincoln 180c then there are several other threads.
i have a wiring diagram if you want it?
The main relay is the big black one in the middle, these are industrial type with a replacable coil if faulty. your local elect wholesaler can help. get a sparky to help.

Hi paul, I'll give you a quick update now I've more time to type.
The 180c was badged by several outlets, snap on etc. If you put arcos lincoln in the search you should be able to pick up the other threads where we discussed a new 6 way switch for me and a wiring diagram. The chap who offered me the switch also provided the diagram which matched the 180c in all but the odd wire position.
If you want me to email the diag send me a private contact with home email.
Further to the relay suggestion. You should see the relay operate when the gun is triggered. If not, get an insulated screwdriver and push the relay moving plunger down to manually close the relay. If this lights up the torch then the relay is duff. These are readily available for about £25 or about £8 for the coil. I have a similar relay on a water pump and I replace the coil yearly and it only switches 5amps.
Give it a go, if you need more help this is the place.

sorry paul, i mean't to say these are rated 16amp supply so you should really have a blue 16amp plug/socket separately fused off your garage fuse board. 3 pins will burn up on max load. not recommended.

I have managed to get it running now, it was the wire which goes up to the trigger in the gun, must have had a split in it somewhere. So thats now all sorted.

Now I just need to find out what liner and tip I need for it, and I'll be ready to weld!!

good work paul, if the torch is an old style and you think the liner is giving trouble it might pay you in the long run to change to a current/euro torch assy. thereby making shield and tips a doddle. various welding outlets should help you compare prices etc.

What would I need to fit a euro torch??

Can I not get any liners/tips for this old style anymore?

The Lincoln's here have a Tweco-style torch connection.

Liners should be easy to get and the torch unplugs on most (just not as obvious as there is a set screw on the side of the wire feeder.)

Parweld makes replacement torches as do others for the Tweco connection and Lincoln trigger wiring.
