Like I really wanted a welding project!

The car was about as dry as it's been this year yesterday so I got underneath to give her a pre winter rust check and wax.

I found a couple of bit of rust in the corners so I gave them a good whacking with my chipping hammer

Looks like I'm going to get some upside down welding practice. I can't get in from above as it's a box section. I thought it was well waxed but I see now that there were two closing plates so I had only waxed up to the first. It rotted out between there and the second plate.

Still it's the first bit of welding she has required in 42 years so I can't complain.

What do you find is the defining feature that makes anybody think the E-type Jag is a nice car??

I think it is very much a statement of it's time. The world was just getting over the post war depression, the 60s was a whole new era and the future looked great. The Mini, the E Type, Twiggy, the pill.

It's still a fabulous car to drive today. In 1961 it must have been mind blowing. What's more it was cheap enough for the masses to aspire to.

Whwn youve repaired those sections (looks like a couple of flat plates), i would drill a big drainage hole (10mm, 3/16") at the lowest point and waxoyl the inside though the hole.

Yes CJ it's just a plate and a small repair at the bottom of the inner wheel arch.

It will certainly get a good waxing. I drilled and tapped the sills M6 at either end and have the holes sealed with a stainless allen bolt.

I might do the same here but there is something to be said for just drilling a nice big drain hole. Either way I'll make sure that it vents into the main chamber and is not just a sealed box.

Horses for courses Migmag, if we all liked the same stuff wouldn't the world be a boring, bland place?
I personally don't particularly like the fixed head E-types but the drophead, now you're talking!
Still a very nice car though Andy, I noticed the rear end setup and thought it was a jag of some sort but didn't recognise it as an E-type. Can't say I ever saw underneath one in my 8 years as a mechanic.

I have toyed with removing the top to make a LWB open car. It's been done. Frankly in this country you are better off with a lid unless it is a 10 times a year car. I use her all year round.

My Series1 4.2 E Type

GREAT car! and glad to hear it gets used regularly and looked after so well. I am also jealous of the large garage and pit!

Series one is the best E-type, love the covered lights, great colour too. Has it even been restored?

She's never been restored (being exported to California for the first 24 years is probably the reason) but did have a pretty poor respray when she came back to the UK from the US in 1990. She was converted to RHD at the same time.

I've done a bit to her over the last couple of years - autobox removed and replaced by a manual overdrive box, front brakes replaced with 4 pot calipers, the dampers are gas filled but she's basically as was available in 1966.

She gets rained on, snowed on, left in Tesco's carpart, used as a delivery van, all the stuff you'd do with a Mondeo. She is no concours winner but I still smile everytime I give her some welly.

The little crack of rust I found along the seam now has a 7 inch plate let in below and this weird shape in the wheelarch.

Ground back, sealed and painted you'd now never know that I had been at it.

Thank God.

Same with me on the Morrises (£60 a year insurance, no tax). I Imagine the E-type being, points, plugs and SU carbs is eminently DIY friendly and if you can weld and paint, then running a classic has to be the absolute cheapest way to run a car! and much more fun :-)

The Jag is very nuts and bolts unlike these modern things run by computers. Apart from having to balance the carbs it no more difficult to look after than your Morris.
