Lighting the blowtorch.

I have a small hand held blowtorch, and it's a pain to light. What do you use? Thinking of getting a unit that fits on to a domestic gas cylinder.. I saw in In a shop the other day. Are these there any good?

I use a disposable cigarette lighter to light my mapp torch it will not light with just a spark. Propane cylinder mounted torches are good if you have a lot to do.

SSur I've seen people using these to liligt torches.

doesnt make any differnce I have a sievert blowtorch and that was difficult to light at times with a normal lighter. I've found that windproof bbq lighters are much better than normal lighters

i have a few blow torches in my collection none are hard to light unless its the old one where you turn it on too high

i even have one of these as well

if you think those are bad to light try being on a roof and trying to light the roof torch arnt they @roofman

put your fingers round the air intake slits on the side of the nozzle turn on and it will light instantly

Sometimes it helps to turn the gas flow down a little and they tend to light quicker, unless you are outside and its blowing a gale.

Mine lights easily enough with a match if the gas flow is minimal.

I have the super fire torch for work like Gaz and a rothernbernerger torch on a propane bottle in the garage. Both need to be turned down low to light easily.

I have the same "problem" with my forge. If you don't light it immediately and the gas builds up, it's not far off like setting of a bomb!

Matches are ok if you want to put your hand right inside then set fire to it. Pile of paper is ok but gets blown out and tries to set fire to the workshop. Tried a few cheapo Chinese lighters, long reach regular lighter (flame gets blown out), long reach "jet flame" lighter (broke after one or two uses). I might try a long reach spark lighter, just a piezo spark on the end of a long reach tube but I doubt if it will work with the forge.

So I bought this: Bullfinch-Vintage-Blow-Torch-Burner-Mark-II off eBay. I know Bullfinch make really good burners even though my old one has failed for some unfathomable reason (probably relating to incorrect gas pressure). It is an auto light and when my other one was working, was a real pleasure just to switch it on and pull the trigger.

<edit> actually, now I come to look at it, I'm not convinced this one has a piezo starter! LOL. Now I need to find another one...

Thanks for all the replies so far! Went to the local Clara market ( in in Ireland) 50 euro for the pie and hand held trigger with igniter.... No cylinder fitting. Think my local hardware unit is looking good now.

gives me so much stress its not even funny...i order all our lads to have at least 2 flint strickers on them at all times and be ready for action when needed
