So feed up with loads of half finished projects i thought i'd start another with every intention of actually finishing this one

So having watched loads of Adam Savage youtube videos i stumbled across this one

Always wanted one and my son wants one too a great little project to introduce him to how the lathe works , most of the construction is just turning and a small bit of milling

to that end i managed to grab a length of 40mm Ali bar from a place i was working



This is what im aiming for



and plenty of plans online





My thoughts are to turn most of the body out of one length but theres a brass bit i'll make out of actual brass and at the other end make the six sided bit using the mill

Has anyone else made a replica of this ?

How does it 'float above the stand?
Magnets? Or just polished perspex?

God knows the stand thingy is probably misleading i did'nt plan to make that but.......

I was tempted to do that but should be a good test of lathe skills and showing my son how to use it too

I 3D printed mine but I interestingly it appears they were made of random bits of stuff. It would appear the base knob is from a tap handle, bit in the middle is from a clamp off a camera tripod, might be a bit off a gun and a rotor from a turbo. The 3D print file names give you an idea of their origin.
