When we think of a shop crane, we usually think of something that will lift a car engine or a 1,000 lb. mill. In recent years, I have trouble lifting heavy tool boxes, picking up and moving grinders and big vises, etc.
I have an engine hoist, but there is no room for it in my shop and I need it in my garage. I needed something that could fit through doorways, straddle a workbench, and lift up to 300 lbs. or so. I came up with the device pictured below. It is constructed of 1" square x .125" wall steel tubing and uses a 440 lb. capacity electric winch with a hand-held control. It rolls on a set of fairly nice hard rubber casters.
When I want to move something heavy, I put a couple of 2x4s across the two lower tubes and sit the item on them while I roll it around.
