Lifting gas bottles

Hi,l work in a quarry and we have an old flatbed truck with our welding and burning gear on the back,the bed is about 5' off the ground.
For years we have been swaping the burning bottles on the back by lifting them on and off with the workshop crane,looping a sling round the neck of the bottle,well today my manager seen this and near had a fit and we are no longer to lift it like that,he thinks BOC must have a lifting too for that job,have any you guys seen anything or have any clues for lifting bottles.

The thing i was thinking of is a two man lifting device thing. Not really suitable for your purpose.

Wire round the neck at BOC , the guy at Wembley rolls two oxy bottles , standing and kicks them to keep them going , very clever !

If your manager has stopped you lifting the bottles in the way you describe, then would it not be better to ask if he can provide a truck with tail lift, to make things safer?

I found all that too. The problem with the Boa grip is it doesn't seem to be available in the UK. The only things available are cradles of one kind or another.

If your manager has stopped you lifting the bottles in the way you describe, then would it not be better to ask if he can provide a truck with tail lift, to make things safer?

What he said - it's the company's duty to put into place a safe system of work. If he's stopped you lifting by the neck then he has to by law provide you with the proper method, equipment and instructions to lift them safely. It isn't your job to go and find that ot for yourself (unless it is actually part of your duty and you are qualified to produce safe systems of work).

Basically, he has to tell you exactly how to lift the bottles safely.

where i work he grabs the bottom of the bottle and swings it over the side until it touches the ground then uprights it by pulling the neck up and the reverse to put it on the lorry

the company does provide a tail lift but the driver says it takes to long to set up use and the bottles have to be at the back of the truck

for me doing one a month its not to bad but if i was doing it everyday i would probable make a v shaped trough which you could roll the bottle into when it was lay down then lift one side of the crate to turn it into a v rather than a l position then lower one end first
