That's about what I've been thinking is happening, thanks for your input.There will be a potential divider somewhere, to set the alarm voltage. Older sets might have adjustable pots but newer sets likely use a network of surface mounted resistors. Likely removing the bleeper, if a separate transducer, is easier, but if the sound comes through the same speaker as the radio audio, you are likely out of luck.
The sound comes through the speaker, seemingly at full volume whatever level the radio volume is set at. My thoughts are that whatever switches the bleeps on would also switch the set off at a battery power level that is also wrong.
So there would still be a problem if the bleep was stopped, that's I haven't bothered looking into disabling the bleep..
