Totally, gash them after 5 yrs and renew, not worth it.

Regulations say, after five years for water or powder based they will have a 5 year DTR.
10 years for a CO2 with hydraulic pressure test on the cylinder.
I will find away to tell the customer it is better and cheaper to have new, than going down the road of DTR.

Not being funny, but has anyone put out a fire in an engine room with your ringpiece going half-a-crown, sixpence, half-a-crown? I have and foam is king, and lots of it. AFFF means being equipped and a good night's sleep

Ok I'm a cynic. If the 'idea' is to get out, why provide extinguishers? Why not big hammers?
Disclaimer: At sea you can't get out, I have no comment to make on fires in buildings.
Ok I do.. why dont the building regulations insist on sprinkler systems on every newbuild? Why isn't fire awareness, fire prevention and fighting taught in school alongside 1st Aid?

Gone are the days of that.
To many have a go hero's.
So they say and train.
Unless you are 100% confident in tackling the fire, with first aide equipment get out.

The building regs are about 8 years behind the real world.
They are catching up. But.

The reason about wet fixed systems or dry fixed systems is the long term cost.

The safe and sensible thing to do in this situation would be to make a frame to sit around the door from 2" plastic waste pipe. Fill all this pipe with thermite and run magnesium ribbon into the pipe from various locations around the workshop.
That way, if you should get a fire the ribbon will go up, light the thermite and the door will just pop off allowing you to escape safely.

Not something I’ve used myself but I can imagine they would be much more convenient than having a bucket of water in the garage, which is something I tend not to do when I’m welding

I actually usually have a plant sprayer filled with water , and its damned handy the long wand thing is great , straight in under carpets etc very very handy ,,, if its a car your working on , its a handy trick to remember that if you kick the earth lead off the argon mix works as a fire extinguisher too ...
just thought id mention it for new welders , and remind a few old ones too.

A damp cloth is handy too, if you don’t have a fire blanket - good for smothering small flare ups

It's more than likely been mentioned by others but for me to set off a powder fire extinguisher it'd have to be a very bad situation and an absolute last resort, those things are worse than the fire damage.

yea went to a pub and the mainstails on db were damaged and a bit melted on the end loose wire I said what the hell is all this white stuffthe chef sprayed all the electrical gear with powder stupid git I had to renew the full board as it was in all the breakers and mains . he panicked apparently

Only used one the once, never again, it was semi outside thankfully but what a mess, dread to think inside a room, can't be any good for your lungs either breathing that stuff in.

It will also make you glad to have super soft triple ply with smoothing moisturizer toilet paper.

Sounds great, but the trouble with that idea is that the little tykes might proudly swagger into class with green or purple faces as a badge of honour

Don't ever buy extinguishers without guages, you can't tell if it's good, and the fire extinguisher bloke, won't even look at them.

He checks all mine biannually, and gives me others, for a small fee.

Extinguishers are to aid escape. Even on ships as you should have a procedure in place, once alarm is raised.

I led a team in ba to extinguish a fire in a non gas covered machinery space and must agree a Macron branch with non aspirated afff is the way to go. Or if the risk is alchols or methanol you want a fffp ar.

In an engine room youd just drop the gas, or water mist.

I have both co2 and afff in the garage.
