I got an earlier version of one of their angle grinders a few years ago, for those times when you need more control than a normal angle grinder. the long handle can give you more delicate control and the variable speed is good when you dont want to put too much heat into a panel your working, like when using a shrinking disk....slow speed and delicate control, just made for doing that job

The sliding mitre saws are back next Sunday too apparently. Not sure if they are any good. £85 this time I think.

My logic for buying three or four is that I may be able to find one of the damn things when I need it

Digital calipers were just in Aldi for £7 something.

I got a set of callipers from Aldi something like 10 years ago. They've been great to use - smooth and accurate and are still going strong. No real difference in feel or accuracy to the Mitutoyo ones at work. I saw them come up again a few weeks ago, so picked up a set as a backup.

They new ones are absolute *crap*:

Very rough action;
Poorly ground (a rough, rather than a satin surface);
FULL of grinding grit and residue (absolutely black with it inside);
Not really hardened (I know you shouldn't do it, but scribing with the tip of the jaws bends them - I've been getting away with that on the other set for years with no visible effect...)
When you close them fully, the internal jaws catch on each other when you open them again.

The new ones remember their setting when "off" which would be handy for poor men's DROs (whereas the old ones reset their zero whenever they're switched on).

I've kept them as a backup, but wouldn't recommend them. I'll have to have a look at the Lidl ones to see whether they're in the race to the bottom too.

Sadly it works the opposite for me.

I use cheap digital calipers because it's not worth me buying decent ones as they get smashed on a regular basis and I'm not doing precision work, but none of mine have lasted long, I accept 12 months use and buy another set every time I see them on offer .

Most of them fail when you move them around the reading goes haywire and loses it's zero, something in there wears out pretty fast.

My Lidl callipers died during turning a cast iron face plate, can't think why. I replaced them with a set of IP?? sealed ones from Amazon which though three times the cost of the Lidl ones are not so nice to use, the buttons take a lot of pressure to operate which I am thinking is the sealing. They have a bit of weight to them and feel good to handle but I have not jelled with them though neither have I broken them, yet.

I have the lidl sliding mitre saw and although it’s not up to the standard of my mates dewalt it’s a great saw Iv mine bout 2 year and it’s done a lot of cutting both in nice new timber and rough old stuff and has never skipped a beat .

Thanks. Will check them out next week. It's not something I'd get a lot of use out of but we have a shed door and garage door surround to repair and something like this would save a lot of time cutting the tongue and groove. Seems better than the cheap B and Q ones I've seen.

Same with me. I've got my expensive Mitutoyo that are too precious to be used everyday when the sub £10 supermarket items do the same job most of the time. No idea, however, where my 2 or 3 cheap ones are at present

Went to check out the sliding mitre saws today. The website said 'some items delayed' and the saws weren't on the site but fortunately they had 2 in stock. We decided to buy one - £85 - and weren't disappointed once we got it going. Bit tricky to set up as we haven't had one before and the handbook was a bit useless. Looking at the spec, they seem similar to the ones sold in B and Q, Screwfix, for around £120.

Anyway, seems to cut sharp and straight, mitre works great. Too sunny to see the laser. Will pay for itself in convenience when we repair the garage door trim, shed door, and lay laminate in the porch. Just a bit bigger than expected, so not easy to store.
