Running a Mig torch, does a longer torch lead to any drop in power at the business end?

Why? I am using a longer one 4m? I was given and after wondering if it makes any difference I am convincing myself it does. I seem to be using a higher power for some jobs than in the past, then again I notice even after years of working I occasionally get a better result by upping the power and improving my technique.

But I can remember from failing A level psychology years back there have been loads of experiments showing that if you think something might make a difference you usually notice a difference and justify by deciding you have been observant.

I think the greater effect of a longer torch will be on wire speed. The extra drag will slow the wire down for a given speed setting so you'll get less current. Upping the power will compensate for this.

What machine do you have chunko, if the wire feed isnt upto much, id be inclined to stick to the 3m, unless you can keep the torch fairly straight.

A Butters 180amp model, I have noticed if I keep the torch free of kinks it makes life easier, but I am going to go back to the shorter version, less of it flopping about all over the place.

4m is good if you need the reach, otherwise its a bit of a pain.
