left hand drilling

I would like to have the option of using left hand drills in my pillar drill, what would be involved to do this?.

Never seen a l/h drill....is it morse taper?,can imagine chucks would be a pain ,have you got lots of drills?

Hello Jordan,

if you intend using both right and left hand drills, consider fitting a reversing switch, so you can select either direction.

Got left hand drills for removing broken bolts/studs and use them in my pistol drill. For use in a pillar drill? Why/what reason. If 3 phase change the phases.

Gav L/H drills are normally for removal and extraction work, IE studs, broken taps drills etc, often made of col-bolt or similar hardness, i use a fair few and nine times out of ten there salvage a job without extreme measures, and yes chucks can be a pitta...

pillars with proper geared heads made for production work normally had reverse switches built in and 3ph motors are easy to reverse, for a crude way of reversing a 1ph drill you could get a longer belt and X it, Iv seen this done a few times..

Hi is your piller drill gear driven or belt driven? if its belt just cross the belt but if its gear driven will be hard to do as you will amost likely have to take the motor to bits to alter the wireing inside it,
Some times the motor will have the wireing in such away it can be changed as a cheep model will run one way and the expensive model will run both ways
you need to find a wireing diagram for you drill and see if theres if theres a better model in the range of your drill,,,

Thanks guys, it is for extracting and it is belt driven A reverse switch is obviously the best option for me as I would like to use it with either rotation so long as it is unlikely that damage will be done to the motor with wiring a switch in?. I'll try your suggestions.

just make sure your drill chuck has taper on it and not threaded on . otherwise it will unscrew its self

Cheers Snowy sounds a bit "JML" to me ....don't have much call for extractors,if its broke ,its broke due to a large spanner trying to undo it and if i can, i hit it with a mig and nut let the heat do its work ..or drill and re-tap...will have to do a search and see if there are decent makes other than JML?....

When i worked in the factory All we used was left hand drills from .5mm up to11/2" and these were used on 70 machines capstons and lathes and drilling machines and were made of High speed steel as well as cobalt/tungstone we even used tipped drills for brick on slow speed to drill steel,,
