That is NOT ballscrew it is Trapezoidal. (ACME)

Hi Stan. I've watched those at sometime or other.

The crossfeed screw and nuts are goosed. So wanted to replace with a 1605 Ball screw and nut, to eliminate backlash. And improve feed.

However it might be ballscrews are not suitable for a manual lathe/mill. Need to look more into it

Ballscrews are not idea for manual machines, you may need some method of locking them, fricton can be so low you can hold one vertically by the nut and watch the rod screw it self out the bottom due to gravity.

They used ballscrews on some early robots, they would collapse under their own weight once power was removed so they fitted braked motors to later ones. I've retro-fitted brakes to few.

Well after ringing round it would seem LH thread ball screws are thin on the ground. Some dealers don't stock and never have, others I daren't ask the price.

It mesmerising isn't it. I showed a mate when he came round. I had to take it off him 10mins later as he was getting on my tits with the "look look, isn't it funny", "yeah 10mins AGO"

According to those "in the know", so long as you set the gibs correctly they don't move. Guess I'll find out
