LED fluorescent tube replacements

One of the fluorescent tubes (large dia type) in my garage is showing signs of giving up the Ghost. Noticed Scewfix (amongst others) are selling LED "tubes". Does anybody know if these fit existing fittings, did note somebody has commented the need to do away with the ballast & starter?

Should do. Make sure they are the type that wire directly to the supply. Otherwise, you're heating your house with the ballast

That price looks good as its for the complete unit. but did you notice that the picture of the light in the garage is about 2m long vs the 1.25m the actual unit is.

Just fitted them in my garage and workshop. Starters replaced with similar looking thing described as a Fuse. Very bright and instant starting.

We have 30 + tubes they are good + 15 x 130 watt high bay lights had them 2 years no problem, on 10\15 hours a day you can do a deal with them if a good order

I got there trade account but I can still get them cheaper at my local wholesaler

That's interesting BS Which wholesaler ? we have trade acc with 3 electrical wholesalers & they were £s dearer.
We have trade acc with Led hut, as thinfourth says easy to open do it on the phone

electric base at Stockton. u have to negotiate prices with them . I buy a lot of gear off them for myself a school I do work for and a guy who owns a lot of houses any prices I get of other company's they will match it or be a bit cheaper

happened to be in an electrical wholesalers today and they had 4' led complete units there on display, they have a plug for the lead going into the light on the end, nice looking lamp alright but i thought it sharp enough at €85 a piece, that makes the lidl one look cheap but i see its not available over here.
ill need 4 good lights here for a garage some time, i think ill go led strips tbh as they seem to make the most sense to me but id like to get em for less than €340 tbh.
6 of them lidl ones id of done just nice..

I priced the led tubes here in dublin a few weeks back and was quoted 20 yoyo's a piece inc vat for the 5' philips ones. A sparks in the shop reckoned the philips ones are very good, when i have a few bob spare i will buy them for the shed.

the price yer man gave me was for complete unit.
i dont know much about the led tubes, are they just as efficient when used in a std fluorescent unit.

FYI the Lidl unit is a sealed unit, that just looks like a fluorescent tube unit. I bought a couple and will try them out.

Edit : Looks good, seems to be brighter than the 5 foot tube in my garage.

I keep looking at LEd tubes, and i've got a couple, but the price keeps putting me off buying more.... more the principal of the price vs the actual price... by the time I'm changing 6ft twin tube fittings to LED I'm looking at £80+ per light

have some of those cheap LED strips in a couple of places where they're hardly used, only really bought them to try but they work really well

have a 13m x 8m freezer to fill with LEDs soon (when it's built)... so I've bought a couple of reels of good LED strips and some reels and some hard strips (all from RS) and a load of LED profile stuff... going to give them a try soon but fingers crossed they'll work well and look good

6Ft ones are expensive, interested in the strip idea knightly how bright is 5 ft of those led against standard tube unit

I'm not 100% sure... problem is LEDs come in different qualities, brightness and colours

proper white LED white is better than a normal bulb or florescent white which is more yellow


I'm not too worried about the length of LED strip needed myself, they hardly use any power so I'm happy to run more than I really need and have the place a bit brighter


I put some cheap led strings in an area above a freezer 5m x 10m, there's mot much up there, only go up there for maintenance etc. I pus 8 x 5m strings up and they're much brighter than the 6 x 5ft tubes they replaced, light is a much better spread etc. etc.
because area is never used, I just cable tied the strings to the steel roof beams and wired them direct to a 12v transformer powered by the old light switch
I had a young lad at work give me a hand, but total install time from starting to finished was about 30min

those were just cheap strings from ebay, paid £1 for each 5m length! I guess those leds are about half as bright as the tubes for the same length... but they were so cheap it's easy to put up two or three times the length

I'd do the same inside the new freezer but it needs to look tidy, so hopefully that trim will work well :-)
