They can be used with or without the ballast as long as it's not the electronic type. The starter switch is bypassed effectively linking the two pins one either end together then the live is taken to one end of the fitting and neutral to the other. You can rip the internals out if you are feeling confident and use the existing wires to re-jig the connections. Make doubly sure you follow the instructions to the letter and that live goes to the correct end. Leaving the ballast in is the easier option but they will consume slightly more power due to losses and heat from it being left in and also they say the tube may not work for so long with it still in.

easy enough just get rid of the ballast and couple the 2 wires together bypass itView attachment 234025 bah, bought these led tube things, expecting to rip the guts out of the existing slimline fittings I have, but lo - the 'structions show the "ballast" still needed - but for what?
Can they work without it?
