Lechler epoxy primer over galvanizing

Should be picking up my freshly galvanized Land Rover bulkhead some time this week, looking at the Lechler data sheet the recommendation is a degrease followed by abrade, anyone done this with any success or would I be better with T wash.

Also, whats the main purpose of sanding the primer, to provide a mechanical key or to flatten the paint to improve the finish. I ask as this is a preservation project rather than a restoration project, I'm not overly concerned about the visual quality of the finish, the rest of the vehicle wont be painted and the bulkhead is at best an awkward shape to sand, can I get away with just spraying a synthetic over the primer.

If you spray your topcoat within 24 hours of laying the epoxy primer down you don't need to sand/scuff it for adhesion.

Thanks for the reply. I was going to apply seam sealer and stone chip as well. By the time the seam sealer and stone chip is dry I guess I've lost the 24hr window, could I put another coat of primer on to recover the 24hr window without keying the original primer coat.

I would just put the synthetic over the stone chip etc.. Unless for some reason the synthetic will not stick to stone chip but will stick to epoxy primer, the coat of epoxy over the stone chip will not be achieving anything.

If you fall out the time window for over spraying the Lechler all you have to do is scuff it up with some Scotch-Brite or similar scuff pads. So it's not problem even if it is a awkward shape.

Looks like I have a weather window to spray outside this weekend and want to get as much done as possible.

Questions, so many questions.

1- How long to leave the primer before seam sealing. Using tiger seal as the seam sealant.

2- How long to leave the seam sealing before stone chip. Stone chip will sit on top of seam sealer in several places. The stone chip will be Gravitex.

3- How long to leave both the seam sealer and stone chip before the top coat.

Temperatures may drop as low as 10 deg overnight but I should be able to get the bulkhead undercover.

I dislike painting.
