leccy thingy whats it called

What one of those things called where if you wanted to test a electrical item ie a drill with no plug on but bare wires you had this thingy where it had 3 sort of clips that you pressed one end the other end lifted up and you put the bare wire in,think the were marked L N E and like keys of a piano sort of
Any clues to what i'm talking about?

I take it they could also be used with 110v stuff if you had the right plug adaptor on the mains end?

No just being lazy with having to put a plug on the end,just to state its only to see if the item works,thats all

Back in the 70's most appliances didn't come with a plug so we would get production workers turn up at the maintenance shop with assorted kettles, toasters etc. asking for them to be "tested" knowing we would fit a plug then leave it on. One of my mates from college gave me an early version of the safeblock so I fitted it to the next toaster for "testing", showed the guy it was working OK, then watched his face as I pulled the wires out of the safeblock before handing it back word soon got around.

There used to be a public information film about using stuff without plugs on. The guy was using a drill with wires poked in the socket with matchsticks

the trouble is with safety films showing wires in plugs with matchsticks it gives a lot more of brain dead's the idea that wouldn't have thought of doing it

You only need a matchstick in the earth to open the catch on the other two Not that I would condone such a thing, everything should come with an appropriately fused plug attached now.

What's wrong with a three way chocolate block on the end of a lead with a 13 amp plug? I have one such lead, and also another with no chocolate block, but boot lace ferrules on the wires. Make testing wire ended and terminal ended kit a doddle.
