there's plenty of reading material online if you search for it... Also don't bother reading the MIG forum MIG guide, some of the info in it is plain wrong, in spite of my asking for it to be re-written for ages now.Of course bud
I'd still like a better explanation of the MIG/MAG processes though, just got one of those dammed inquisitive minds

They don't mention this but other sources do: O2 reduces the surface tension of the weld puddle which makes it wet out easier and also reduces spatter. It ALSO makes the weld run a little hotter, but you could acheive the same thing with more CO2 a lot more cheaply.
It's the wetting and spatter reduction that makes it worthwhile. Although its not really something that's totally necessary... European and American gas mixes generally just have Ar and CO2. I secretly think BOC marketing had a large part to play to explain why we add O2 in our mixes, but I'm not complaining...
