Leaking Stop Cock replacement

Hi All,
Got a stop cock leaking from the gland - gland has resisted all attempt to tighten, so I'm going to replace it. Is is legal/feasible/sensible to replace it with a ball valve or should I do like for like?

I'd use a ball valve. All of the new meter installations use a quarter turn valve in the pavement.

I wouldn't, first time you turn it off it will leak

Undo the gland nut, wind a load of ptfe around the stem and do the gland nut up whilst turning the tap on and off. Has always worked for me. The ptfe forms a new gland.
I agree with kayos on the quarter turn valves. They sit idle for years and when you turn them the seals start weeping and you wish you’d never touched it.

just stick a standard brass tap in they have been good enough for all these years . just turn them on and off now and then so they dont seize up or leak on the gland

In theory yes, I bought some 54mm ones last week, £70 each and they were rubbish. Seems everything is made of chinesium these days

We bought some 2" bore 1/4 turn taps , they didn't turn, we sent them back. Absolute crap. Were replaced with ones which did work. Eventually..
