LDV turbo

I have a LDV Convoy fitted with a Ford Duratorq 2.4 diesel with turbo. I have all the service and maintenance manuals advertised through the ebay but would like a description type of "how it works" manual so that I can work out how the turbo works. It is a funny set up in that the front two cylinders just feed the turbo and the other two feed straight down the exhaust. It is a one piece manifold (or header as the yanks like to call it) and it has no wastegate fitted. I had a firm called Celtic Tuning come and reprogram the Power Train Module (as it is called on the Convoy) to give it more torque and better fuel consumption. They had previously reprogrammed my VW Tiguan and it worked a treat. They come to you and take about one hour. Brilliant lads and they do a great job. Anyway when the lad looked at the engine and tried to reprogram the engine as a turbo it did not recognise it and so had to do it as a normally aspirated. In fact the link they had on their website to the dvla stated that it was a normally aspirated engine!! Still they managed and it worked. The engine has more torque and so you are not always in the box as before, same as on the Tiguan. So anybody any idea of where I can source the info. I have tried the usual GOOGLE links to no avail.

It's also fitted to Ford Galaxy (German market) and Land Rover Defender as 2.4TDCi, part of Ford ZSD engine family. You can expand the google search a bit now

I think you are a little confused the 2.4 has never been (as you put it) normally aspirated ASAIK and the exhaust manifold on all turbos are configured for all the pipes to feed the turbo, the turbo is controlled by a variable vane set up so does not have a waste gate as such, the variable vanes are like little blades that are around the circumference of the exhaust impeller that defect the gases at a different angle to the impeller whether torque or high speed is required they are adjusted by a vacuum actuator.
The fact that they set the engine as a NA (naturally aspirated) is a bit dubious especially due to the fact it improved it !!

What an odd set up. Still it seems to work. As norm says turbo will probably be VGT.

p0689109----- I have just had a thought --- are sure you are not talking about intercooled and non intercooled? as both are turbos but the intercooled has a radiator between the turbo and the inlet to cool the intake air because cooler air is more dense and therefore has more oxygen in it which produces more power when (even) more fuel can be added.
I have just checked on autodata and they only have 2.4 TD or 2.4 TDI, both of which are turbos, unless it is pre 2002 then they have the 2.5 DI or the 2.5 TURBO DI both of which are completely different beasts to the 2.4

normspanners My convoy has an intercooler If you look on ebay and do a search for a "LDV Turbo" there are a few shown on offer under " ldv convoy 2.4 turbo charger for a 2003". It appears that the front two are impinging on the turbine and the rear two are free to take the other outlet to the exhaust pipe. I know it is definitely a turbo it is just that the DVLA have it on their records as a normally aspirated and the tuning company had the problem but the boss back at HQ is a whizz and came up with the correct program. It works anyway.

I apologise I thought you may have had a VGT with you saying it did not have a waste gate, this picture of your turbo clearly shows the waste gate and pressure actuator, this controls a flap that closes off the branch from the main manifold allowing the gases from all FOUR exhaust ports to be directed through the turbo turbine increasing the speed of the compressor wheel until the pressure builds to a pre set value, (adjusted by the length of the connecting rod) the inlet pressure travels through the short black rubber hose to the pressure actuator that then opens the flap in the square section of the manifold which will open the 'sortcut' tract (that you thought was a direct route to the exhaust) reducing the pre turbo exhaust manifold pressure and therefore controlling turbine speed and ultimately the boost pressure.

Many thanks normspanners for your info. I had to get under the van to see the actuator etc. Apparently you have to buy the complete assembly as they are matched on production. Thankfully mine is ok! I reread the service booklet on the engine and it actually gives a description of the EGR system and a diagram of how it works. Its a pity these range of booklets I have got do not do that with all the systems like the fuel system etc.

That stuff about matched parts is usually cobblers. Manufacturers just say that. One thing laughs at the other when they state something is matched then give the system a means of adjustment. What specifically do you want to know about the fuel system? They are all roughly similar, can probably fill in the blanks if you give me the basics on system type and make up.

i was going to they arren't matched, they made adjusted, on teh transit i just duffed the bit on and tweekd till it drove right lol

it will just be a mk6 transit engine. if you want to know anything then just ask the guys on the transit forum as the ldv one is rubbish and they don't want to know you unless you have a god awful Sherpa.
id be worried that you tuning guys didn't know what was going on.
what year is it?

The LDV is running OK. I was only after a manual to cover the systems from a description point of view(viz a viz the early Haynes) in case anything does go wrong then I can work out myself what is what. I am a retired licensed aircraft engineer with a lifetime of working on cars as a hobby behind me so can normally diagnose defects as long as I know what I am dealing with. Thanks for the offers though.
