Lathe wiring/control(s).....

With the arrival of my 'new' lathe imminent, I been thinking about switches and controls to put on it, as it presently has a 13A plug directly on the motor feed.

So, my initial thinking is - I have one of these which I took off the old lathe when I sold it

Have one of these bought and in transit

And am planning one of these in place of a more expensive Dewhurst switch

In terms of wiring it all up, am I right in thinking that the order should be

Mains power > NVR > 1/OFF/2 switch > speed controller

Or is that rubbish? My thinking is the controller [which only cost £1.24 so no harm done if it's not needed ] will allow more variable chuck speed(s)?

Apologies if this is daft thinking, but I generally don't do elektrickery.....

Won't know until it arrives next week, but I suspect it's a universal one. As for reversing, I just thought it'd be a handy function to have. Can you tell from this

I'm aware that some [if not all] the Tri-Leva models had a dual speed motor, giving 6-speed.

An eminently sensible idea, I'll get details off the motor plate and put up the details from it.

Slightly off the main topic, but I've seen one of these for sale locally for £20, would it work as a coolant fluid pump with suitable plumbing? The lathe has its proper stand and tray with it.

Sounds expensive - I'd scrounge a broken washing machine and use the pump off that.

If it's an imperial machine and hes cutting metric threads, or vice versa, reversing the motor is a must, as winding it back on the chuck gets a bit boring after a bit

I've just re-read the spec of the switch in pic #3 above and see that it's for switching power to two different machines e.g. drill and mill etc - so no use as a Dewhurst substitute. And I thought it was a cunning plan........

Going to wait for the lathe to arrive and see what motor is on her before proceeding, it might be a hunt for a D/hurst will be on the cards.

Have you looked at Kraus & Naimer switches? loads of configurations available.

I have one of these and been using it for the past year with no problems at all. It was only £8 and well worth the money.

Yes it's not exactly the same as the one in your pic but it is of similar configuration. I pulled it from an old generator control panel. All you need is sufficient contacts inside to do the job - how many contacts does your example have?

I did pretty much the same on my drill

All you need is sufficient contacts inside to do the job - how many contacts does your example have?

Hmm well on my motor you need at least four individual contact pairs. Your motor may have a different setup but it'll usually be two pairs of wires for motor reversing.

Well I stuck a bid in on the switch but was outbid by someone using [I think] sniping software. Can't complain as I some times use it myself to good effect.......

I'm going to wait until it arrives and check out the motor to see what's what. If it proves to be 'reversible' I'll start the switch hunt again, but'll fit the NVR [and speed controller] meantime.
