I failed to realise this when I got a set with the lathe in 1991.The brazed tip tool sets are not sharpened as new and require a green wheel to get them cutting properly + if it is a Clarke you may not have the grunt available to run them properly.

Polished CCGT inserts are not suitable for steel, people keep suggesting it, it appears they havent tried decent inserts. You only get seconds out of a non ferrous insert on steel
rarely use tct unless its hard material, hss does 90 percent of turning if you sharpen them properly ,most folk dont know how tohave a load of HSS but never use em now.....
I just use replaceable tipped Carbide....
