Lathe Toolpost Dieholder.

Hello all, pinched the idea for this dieholder off a Russian machinist on Utube. Cant remember having ever seen one of these before, tailstock yes but not on the toolpost. Simple idea, spring loaded with a lump of 10mm flat welded to the tube. The red knob is just because I had one lying around !. Nice little project....

That would be Ciava Metrov in English, assuming your Latin substitution for Cyrillic letters is right.

I think actually looking at what you have written it is more likely to be слава метро which is glory to metrov. Not sure...

It is Slava Petrov which means glory to Petrov, or Famous Petrov.

You just have to maul the apron up and down and accurately align the holder....

I can't really see any advantage over the tailstock one I use. In fact I just see the disadvantage of not being self aligning.

If you are, I'm missing it too.

A tailstock is less of a ballache, & perfectly aligned.

Not sure mine is perfectly aligned . . . but probably more perfectly than something clamped in the tool post. Something I keep meaning to make for mine though - as well as a tap holder - only remember the next I need either one . . and still haven't got them.

It might have limited use if you are doing small batch work and your tailstock is already occupied by something else.

You could engage the halfnuts so the carriage keeps pace with it - it would then be akin to a semi-floating tap holder as used on a mill.

Especially if you have a DRO on the lathe with a tool library, you align it once each time you use it and store its position in the DRO. It would work better for those who run the machine without a compound slide.

It could be made quicker to align by reaming its bore and having a short length of ground bar that you chuck up and poke into the hole while it is loose in its holder and then tightening the toolpost screws. You would still need to think about the up-and-down alignment.

It is a neat idea and I will be making one, but with a slight modification. If you don't block the exit with that bar you have a good through threading tool holder, you could thread an infinite length of bar if you wanted to.

Dropping that onto a quick change toolpost will be much faster than breaking down the tailstock and fitting a die holder then putting it all back afterwards. The question of alignment is a non issue, takes seconds, your height would already have been set up as it would be in the toolholder and all you would need to watch is your fore aft alignment.

A set of different or even the same size interchangeable die holders would be a good investment too.

Still sounds like a ballache to me. There's nothing mentioned there which can't be achieved easily normally. The simple fact none of us currently have/use one proves that point.

Tales me all of 15 seconds to knock out whatever is in the tailstock and swap it , probably takes me longer to find the right tap or die

I think I could put my tailstock die holder in almost as quick as inserting one into my qctp. It will be aligned straight away too, so overall it will be quicker. I'm just not getting this.
