Lathe questions

I have the opportunity to purchase a Dean Smith & Grace 13x30 lathe (1967 vintage) from my work for scrap value the problem is that in the 3 months I have been there the lathe has been sitting on a pallet and not been running.
I have had a good look over it and there doesn't seem to be any excessive play or wear that I can see. My main problem is that the guy that operated the lathe the most has been off on holiday so I have been unable to speak to him about it. He comes back on Monday but I need to give them a decision quickly or it goes for scrap.
Is there anyone on the forum that has experience of these lathes that could tell me of any common faults with them or anything else to ask/lookout for?

For heaven's sake don't let that lathe go to scrap. Even if you don't want it - someone will travel the length of the country to buy it off you for a good profit.

Problem is, it probably weighs a ton. If it's 50p a ton for scrap, that's a £500 gamble... but agreed, a fantastic machine tool!

I would think it weighs more like 2 tons, so scrap value £3-400. You'll treble that if you sell it on.

DSG's are toolroom lathes,if u look @ the bed you'll see diagonal bracing the entire length,they are the biz! Only drawback is ,you may not get a gap bed preventing you turning large pieces.

a £200 quid inverter will sort that

Buy it, it'll be fine . If finding somewhere to put a nearly 2 ton lump of metal and/or the 7.5hp motor are issues can worry about them later. Even if it did turn out to be knackered there'll be plenty of bits that can be flogged on for more than scrap value

Guys, Thanks for all your replies, I had read up on Lathes.co.uk about the DSG and realised that it would be a shocking waste if the lathe got scrapped.
I've just been speaking with my neighbour and he will transport it for me so come Monday I'll tell them I'll buy it. Should this result in a divorce when I tell the wife, Drains will have the chance of first refusal.

Come on --wheres the romantic streak in you, buy her it for a valentines day present, bit of pink ribbon, tell here what its worth and how much you paid.
Best buy you`ll ever ever make. The Rolls Royce of Lathes. probably had an easy life, many options to get it running, but worry about that later.

I actually had a dyslexic moment and the first part of that arrived in my brain as "Should this result in divorce then I sell the wife"

I had to go back for a second go to make the scentence make sense.
