Lathe motor size?

Hi folks,

I have a Faircut Junior lathe (3.5" swing 12.5" centres) that needs a new motor as the one it came with (not original and of unknown spec) cant even spin the flywheel on the countershaft without stalling!

I'm thinking I need either a 0.5hp or a 0.75hp but can't decide if a 0.75 will be too much and break something rather than stalling.

Also is there any way to add a clutch into the system so I can disengage the motor without turning it off, I had a brief idea of a hydraulic bike disc brake that is on to engage and off to disengage with two disc's, one connected to the motor and one to the drive. Either that or a brass plate thats lever operated against a steel drive plate.

Just leave the belt a bit slack.

see if you can get a sewing machine motor not the little ones but the pro one they have a built in clutch but are on the large size

But they work and are safe

Washing machine motors are ideal for driving smaller lathes of this ilk,pretty cheap to buy as well on ebay from£10 upto £30 used.

1/4 to1/2 hp or even 3/4 hp if the price is right, the old 1/4hp 1425rpm washing machine motors[not the modern automatics] were usefull but gone are the days when you could pick them up for a quid or two, & they're more scarce now, if the motor mount swings for tension as said above you can set the belt so it disengages & re-engages,my old flat belt edgewick had a system like that & it worked a treat,but that was a flat belt [people poo poo flat belts] but they're a good belt for lathes. You're not going to damage your lathe with a larger motor unless you do something silly.

Do you have a mechanical mind? the best way is and this gives you the best of both worlds.....CVT transmission.

The parts are there on ebay,you just got to make a solid block housing to keep them in place on their spindles/shafts.

Automatic scoot transmission parts can be had secondhand at peanuts money on some listings and if made to adapt to the lathe this will give variable speeds and a dead stop without turning of the motor.

I did see a sowing machine motor with clutch, only thing is i wanted a 4pole as they run slower as id rather not muck about with the gearing. its fairly original in that respect.

the damage i thought i may do was strip teeth etc if the chuck stuck for some reason and the motor didnt stall.

This is driving a drill press but the same priciple can be adapted to the lathe

I have a lathe with CVT and I fitted the same to my milling machine. It's very handy for the adjustability it gives BUT there's a price to pay in that 1) it's quite a power-sapper and 2) it's not the smoothest drive in the world.

You could tension the belt with a spring loaded idler such that if the load stalls the belt straightens, the idler pivots up and opens a microswitch to stop the motor. You would need a no volts release between the switch & motor.

my old flat belt edgewick had a system like that & it worked a treat,but that was a flat belt [people poo poo flat belts] but they're a good belt for lathes. .

There's 2" wide flat belts transmitting 30hp, 4" wide and they can be over 40hp, on some of the big wood moulders

did you use available pulleys or made your own?

The ones I know of are just a bit too large but think they might be available in the smaller bikes for kids.

I used Denford Viceroy 280 pulleys and belt.

Just leave the belt a bit slack.

That's the best method I've found. Just tweak tension until it works fine for normal use but slips under heavy load.

Yes but there's nothing on the bay secondhand amongst the variators and clutch side.
