lathe motor nvr switch ?

Hi I've recently aquired an old boxford model C lathe and no doubt I shall be asking more questions on that as time goes on. I'm a few weeks away from getting it in position and set up in it's new home but want to get together a few of the bits and pieces I will need, the motor is currently wired directly to a 3 amp fused plug and there are no other on / off switches or any electrical safety whatsoever on the lathe, presumably this was ok in times gone by but I need to make it safe to use without having to reach over the bed when using it so I was thinking of buying this

and mounting it on the front of the stand is this a reasonable solution or are there better options available to me ? any help or advice gladly received thanks in advance Norm

That would do the trick, but you would still need a reversing switch if you ever needed to run the lathe in reverse, google Dewhurst switch.

We have a couple of boxfords at work, every year the "safety man" who inspects our equipment writes on his report that a control knob has been cut off, & every year I tell our safety man that it's cut off for a reason, and that is boxfords have screw on chucks & you should never run them in reverse as the chuck can unscrew & cause damage. Of course he comes when I'm not there so I can't "educate" him.

Why was it made with a reverse switch then?

clip the revolving chuck in reverse with the tool and u will soon find out

I used a Boxford for years
Never had any issues with the chuck when running the lathe in reverse
It is very handy for screw cutting when the feed nut has to remain engaged

that is verry true . but in schools u have to cater for incompetent people and there safety

Spin the chuck on and hit it home against the register and I defy you to un-screw it. A heavy interrupted cut might do it but little else, many a back-gear smashed trying.

It's like that time I extended a telescopic fishing rod by flicking it out. Never went back in again.
