Lathe chucks

How often do you lads strip and clean the scroll on your chucks ? my 3 jaw is not worn on my Harrison 11" but i must have to strip and clean it out at least once a month to clear chips that seem to get lodged in the jaw grooves and scroll...get tight spots when using the chuck and it feels terrible.

If I've been boring and the chips have gone into the chuck I'll take the jaws out and clean the jaws / scroll of chips. Old tooth brush is good for this.

when you open them up you do wonder how it all gets in the internals...always seems to be the high carbon tiny chips that never turns nice like that horrible BSP steel pipe

Use better metal to turn so you get proper chips…rust dust is bad for sticking to things and making a mess. I machined the brake back plates off an old trailer axle, took longer to clean the machine than it did to do the job!

What tools are you using? Higher carbon turns nicer! Not turned any pipe though.

Clean mine when they need it, tho I only use 4 jaws.
