Where are you? I find the metals warehouse of Mackays of Cambridge to be a hobby friendly place, prices seem okay too!

Also calling to your local machine shop or fabricators and asking will they sell you a small amount sometimes works. Also ebay , plenty of material offcuts on there for sale.
