Latest scrap price - mild steel

Some useless/useful information:

Just cleared my garden of scrap mild steel. 200kg got me £18, here in Dorset. Eyeing up his pc screen his going rate is £90/tonne.

Dont know whether its a good rate or not, or how it compares to other parts of the country. I will be weighing in some copper in a few weeks, be interesting to note the price of that.

200 quid a tonne here - that was for 'girder and plate' clean offcuts. Nothing much over a metre and heavy stuff - not sure what the going rate for different classes of mild steel is.
The big grab takes it off our wagon and throws it straight in a huge skip and not onto the muncher so I guess a better rate as they don't need to process it.

Looking at the reciept, the price was for mixed steel.

I weighed in some rusty scaffold, a couple of mower decks, a mixture of offcuts, pressed steel guttering, water pipe and about 30kg of nails that my father in law pulls from all the pallets we use in the wood burners. Where we live used to be a plant nursery with large commercial glass houses and when I can be bothered I root around and pull out another load of scrap and take it to the scrap yard, it's a shame that glass isn't valued in the same way as we must have a few thousand panes of glass stacked up around the place!

flog the glass as it will sell quite well if there full panes

Horticultural glass will fetch good money on ebay - the size of the panes tend to be standarsized.

Light iron is about £90/tonne at the yards i use currently. Which is spot on the £18/200kg mentioned in the first post.

http://www.letsrecycle.com/prices/metals/ferrous-metals will give ball park figures.

A national, like EMR, will give over the phone prices without any of the petty haggling that a smaller yard might require.

Horticultural glass will fetch good money on ebay - the size of the panes tend to be standarsized.

Just don't write "fragile" on the packaging when you post it

I always thought horticultural glass to be cheaper as its got a slight colour to it

weighed a car in today @ £95/ tonne and a few batterys @ £420/tonne

I usually leave any offcuts and old gates/railings that ive removed outside the shop for any passing scrapmen, but i decided to load the van up and pay my first visit to a recyclers.

79 quid for 0.45 ton was my return on the payslip

But i had to make two trips because i got turned away the first time as i had no I.D and they needed bank details

I heard that the price is going up because of a shortage, due to the new id rules, and our travelling friends not being able to get away with the outrageous level of theiving anymore .

On the glass topic I used to make and sell quite a few fabricated lanterns to go outside customers front doors and I would always search through the panes to find ones with bubbles and defects in as it gave the lamps 'character'.
They always seemed to sell well.
