Probably obvious, but if you haven't worked it out, large electric motor powers the drive/flywheels. The lever at the front moves the flywheels left and right. Depending on which one is in contact with the rubber tyred drive wheel it either spins the main screw clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Apparently there were 2 beam hammers too. I was told they were the only ones of their type in existance. One got cut up before it could be rescued, the other is now in a museum or similar.
Not much else left in the building though.

It's staying as a feature
It's a big building, being converted into flats. Being done well though. We're dropping a few liners and fitting some multi fuel stoves.
There was talk of moving it but the crane required would mean blocking roads etc so it's staying where it is.

Yeah, shame the beam engines went.Good they should do more of that kind of thing.
Imagine living in a flat and being able to look at a beam engine or similar - awesome
Not sure what this area will end up as, communal courtyard?
I think this area was roofed, but may not be in future.
That would be a shame as this is in working order. Just needs a little fettling.

We had a few of those at OMES Faulkner Ltd in Colnbrook, the biggest was 750 ton. One of the press setters took the tool out of a 500 ton and left it up without chocking and the weight started the screw rotating. The wheel hit bottom and the screw carried on stripping the thread out of the nut leaving the wheel balancing on top. The stripped thread came off like a huge Slinky!

Thanks for adding that. It looked like both flywheels were in contact with the rubber, which would stop it working at all.
Also note that the gear ratio changes as the ram lowers: with it at the top of its stroke, it is lower geared than when at the bottom, so the ram will accelerate towards the bang and decelerate towards the top.
The ram looks to interact with its operating mechanism, so it might automatically put it into neutral at the top of the stroke.

I did think it was excessive for cutlery!
Still loads of installs going on. They have tightened right up on the regs though, but it's mainly just actually enforcing the regs that already existed.

Would make sense to have it automatically go into neutral. Relying on operator to catch it every time at the right point would be a risk.
I was quite surprised how small the motor was (still a big motor though!), but I guess weight and inertia do all the work, the motor just sets it in motion.
Unfortunately I couldn't get to the motor data plate to read it. I'll have a climb when I'm there next.

Whats the betting that when they get around to " sympathetically" renovating it some pillock will paint it sky blue pink to match the surrounding decor.
That's always assuming that the P.C. brigade don't condemn it because it might suddenly levitate and fall on some little oik.

If the project manager had anything to do with it, it will stay exactly ad it is. More chance he would get it working than paint it.
If it was super rare, he would have made sure it was removed and saved.
Its quite nice meeting a project manager, converting an old building, who very much cares about the heritage.
What will happen on the buildings first refurb in 5 or 10 years time, who knows!
