Large Capacity Verniers?

Hi All. I know there is a lot of knowledge on here and I'm hoping to tap into it. I just took a very random call from a customer who had used one of our HD scanners to survey some standing steelwork. These things are very accurate but, depending on the surface being scanned (at up to 2 million points per second) you can get some "noise" on the scans. This chap wants to sanity check random sections of the steel and a digital vernier is what he wants to use. However, the standard 150mm ones aren't large enough.

Is there anything larger that exists? We don't do them, I just want to point him in the right direction.

I’ve seen Vernier calipers a metre long before now, but that was long ago. You can still buy big digital calipers though.

I have seen 2m digital ones but only cheap versions and I'm not sure how accurate they would be.

I have got a massive manual mititoyo if he wants to get his money out?

Just be aware that the decent ones scale up in size as well as length so they are almost a 2 man job to use.

Or, if I was checking something like a cmm arm over distance I would just use a calibrated test piece.

I would think all he would need is a random bit of steel work, get it accurately measured then scan it to check the scanner is reading what the piece actually measures.

I have got a few bigger calibration/ setting bars that would already be a known measurement but I think they are all for use with cmm touch probes so they are all polished and shiny. Don't know how well that would work with a scanner?
I might have some big vernier setting bars somewhere but not sure how big

Theres a second hand engineering suppliers in Sheffield that have manual verniers up to 1m in the shop window.

Plus loads of other stuff, they used to have a 4" taper shank drill bit on show, looked like it had been used only once.

Plus loads of other stuff, they used to have a 4" taper shank drill bit on show, looked like it had been used only once.

Had a 2metre set in the inspection dept where I worked sometime ago.
But as Mike said, surely a rule would be accurate enough to check dimensions of steelwork? The rule would be as accurate as the rolling tolerance.

Nice looking bits of kit them scanners, work has had someone in once or twice to scan rooms.

Exactly. Is the customer going to adjust the figure his caliper gives depending on paint specification (dry film thickness)?

We regularly used to use a set of 40” mitutoyo vernier callipers. Not digital though.

Went pass today they appear to have loads of height gauges up to about a metre, plus loads of 50 taper collets. ATM.

If you want the best quality then Sylvac are right up there, their ultra light carbon caliper goes up to 3m I think.

Im sure they did a promotional world record one at nearly 10m a few years ago, probably only slightly more accurate than a tape measure though at that length.
