Laptop Screens

Its an Acer Aspire 15. Switched it on, grabbed the mouse from where it lives, behind me. As I turned, it slipped out of my hand, hitting the screen.

Anyone know if screens can be replaced and the cost etc..?
It is my fault so any warranty is not going to cover it, although it does appear much more fragile than I expected - theres no protection like a phone or tablet screen.

screens are quite an easy replace and about £20-30 quid about 20 30 min to fit if a newer screen a few quid more and the newer ones are mostly glued on to the back panel instead of 4 screws on a frame but still quite a easy diy fix

shop price £80-100 inc the screen as a guess

As above. I have purchased and changed a few. I doubt YOU would have much trouble doing it yourself.

Generally speaking they're easily replaced, iFixIt probably have a guide for your specific model.

Biggest problem is if the screen is available.
I've still got a Panasonic Toughbook in bits, but I couldn't source a new screen for it.

Well it seems to be getting worse. I hope the screen being damaged is not going to damage the driver?

Anyone able to locate the correct screen unit for the Acer Aspire 15? I wouldnt know where to look!

I'm suprised - I know phone screens are commonly available but a pain to fit due to gettimg acess etc.. I'd have expected laptop screen to cost a lot more.

Bite the bullet and pull it apart, there will be a part number on the screen itself.

Oh yes, its quite new and only been used for my 3d printing stuff, even so, browser cleared, passwords and my files all deleted. If a shop looked through it while fixing, I dont want any chance of being hacked!

Alterntive could be an external hdmi screen and keyboard, that may be better for me even.

have a look around the screen if there are no screws (there might be rubber plugs or paper round covers on older models )
newer stuff or mostly clip together start on on of the sides in the middle use a pry tool (idealy if your thumb nails are strong thats enought and better than a pry tool)push in and slip the too apart work down a bit untill 2inch from the bottem of the frame then work up to the top across the top (bening more carfull here as the wifi cables and camera are normaly up there )and then i normalt split the middle of the other side work down again 2 inch from the bottem then up to the top and at this point the whole thing should be free apart from the bottem parts
pull the whole front plastic forward (dont use the the pry tool unlees you have to now and be carfull again as the controller for the screen are normaly under the screen at the bottem just run your thumb along the bottem part surround while pulling the whole plastic surround towards you and look between the screen and the surround some times there glued or taped down there a bit of a fiddle should the split the whole front plastics off showing you the screen and controller

with luck you have 4 screws and 2 metal frame parts unscrew and the screen should flop foward if no screws its a case of prying the screen off the back cover warm it up a bit helps on this from the back not the screen once off there shouls be a 30 ish pin connector with tape holding it in pull off the tape slide out the connector and the screen is free look up the numbers/letters and surch ebay for a screen that matches the lettersnumbers and the connector is in the same place on the back of the screen and the screen size (but if you input the letters and numbers this generaly means its a match

there are not that meny screens and a lot will fit meny others just get the few bits right type of screen normaly there might be lessof a viewing angle or not glossy screen on the cheapers versions but the way most people use a laptop you will not notice it

and you should beable to to use the laptop on an exterior screen through hdmi if it has one

My ThinkPad screen died, just out of warranty

Local shop did it, despite being an odd fellow it was quick and reasonably priced, was a few years ago, a 17" 1080 screen

you could plug in a monitor if it does die and boot it up and run from that in the short term ,,, keep you going if the screen did die

I change screens at work all the time under warrantee and this is the only reliable way to guarantee you get the right one, numerous time the wrong one turns up direct from the manufacturer especially Dell. I check the part number on the box against what ive taken out before I even bother to open it.

Most screens except the the stuck on bezel type are a doodle to swap if its one of those youll need to get a bezel too as they never stick back properly

possably but generaly not worth it as most lightly the excess on the policy would pay for a shop to do the fix at 80 or 100 quid

Most of what I do is under warrenty so direct from manufacturer or suppliers i dont get involved in that , but I ask my friend and he has bought a few screens from that site with no issues . He runs a small PC repair shop and if there was a reliability issue people would be back like a shot. He said Ebay is a good source too there are some big laptop breakers on there most have great feedback and they are all tested
