I spent an hour or so pulling the screen of my laptop apart this afternoon.
The back light went about a year ago, I got a tube, the cheapest part to replace and it's been under the coffee table since.
Hopefully when I put it back together tomorrow it till work.

What does this have to do with welding........

Its worth checking the cables before you put it all back together. They break near the hinge. Also make sure the tape securing the cables is fitted, saves the cable coming loose later.

So what about the taped off bit at the top of the screen with a label suggesting the world will end if you touch the white bit. the bit I wiggled my lock knife under and peeled off;-)

I could be planning on brewing with it, In fact I want it at hand as I find the the need for a cad pc close while I do something. My other laptop is an even slower Itronix with a 800x600 screen.
Quite amazingly the dell works now, though it doesn't look to bright, maybe I got the screen elements back in the wrong order?
I had to put the screen assembly together about five times as I kept finding I was assembling it in the wrong order, or something wasn't quite right. The tubes seem pretty robust, considering how thick they are, I bent the old one quite a lot before it snapped.
All in all if I had a backlight go again I would replace the tube, it's pretty simple to replace.
