Landrover Bonatti Grey (LRC659)

I have some confusion over this paint - does it require a clear coat?

(i cant work out if its a "metallic" or just a grey)

I'm thinking of painting the 101 in it, and was going to order a small can to make sure i like it, but now i cant work out if its a clear coat job (in which case ill have to choose something else, as i don't really think clear coat fits with the 101)


This may (or may not) be the one @KimB used on her build. That or Havana maybe?

Mine was Havana Grey. I’m not sure what the paint code was now. It was clear coated though. Mine was metallic as well I’d say. It was almost pearlescent looking. Any slight mark or blemish could be spotted very easily.

It was the tomb raider colour, so, i guess, about when that film came out. A while back, but not in landrover terms, i guess.

I wouldn't know where to find a "tech sheet" - if you google the code, theres all sorts, from touch up sticks to rattle cans etc. If i was using it, id just send the code and get it mixed, but, as to the "original landrover spec" - i have zero idea.

If it was used on the Tomb Raider Landy, PPG would have been the paint supplier at that time, may be worth contacting them?

You can ask for a colour in a base coat, or as a direct gloss. Naturally metallics are not going to have much depth as a direct gloss but it can be a means to an end. Your paint supplier might also have some reluctance to mix it.

How would you cut and polish a metallic gloss?

You wouldn't bother, you can't polish a .... Or exactly as you would with basecoat and lacquer. The issue is as I said earlier, it's not going to give the same finish and polishing will dull it further as the particles get smeared (I am assuming, I have never used it, let alone tried to polish it). I don't recommend it, paint suppliers will be reluctant to mix it, but it exists. It might be used for a quick aerosol repair to a banger maybe.

My disco is Bonatti grey, pretty sure is is paint then laquer, as when the screen guys removed their tape some of the laquer came off!
Great colour, car can be as dirty as your dream girl and still look good, the colour does not seem to date either.

As 2k solid paints are banned for anything other than classics or commercial, all newish vehicles will be done in water based colour and then 2K lacquer. You can still ask a paint factor for a can of metallic direct gloss (1K) in an aerosol.
