Hi all. I know it's a bit of a long shot, but has anyone got a steering box for a series III siting on a shelf gathering dust? My 2a lightweight has just failed the MOT on the steering box & I can't aford a new one. It's the series III one I'm after (the one with the nut on the end to hold on the steering wheel, as oposed to the one with the pinch bolt). I can pay a small amount of cash or you can have my soul. Anyware near the Manchester area would be ideal. I can collect.

Surprised it's failed MOT if it's not got beyond use. They're adjustable to a point for wear and fully seviceable for bearings, worm and recirculating balls so almost nothing that can't be fixed.

I appreciate a spare makes for a quicker fix and gets you back on the road if it's your only transport though.

although ive never taken one apart, ive adjusted mine.

Twas a reonditoned one just about 4 years ago, and its already got slop in it and run out of adjustment, although it is a 90 not a series.

I have been told they can be a 'stard to rebuild, like you need big presses for the bushes etc but i don't know from direct experience. When i repalce mine one day I will probably take it apart, just to see how it works

Not sure the MOT tester will wear that one!

Seem to remember the limit was something like 2-3" at the wheel rim was the allowable for a Series Land Rover. Of course if you have a smaller wheel (Mountney or similar) 2-3" makes a bit more allowable than with the original bus size offering.

i repaired the drop arm ball joint on my 90 again a few months back as it had play in it, took it to a trial and towards the end of the day i noticed that I had very vague steering... the circlip groove in the underside of the drop arm was knackered and the clip had dropped out... the only reason the ball joint was still there was 'cos of the nut on the top!

Made for a very interesting (thankfully not too long) drive home, with 90 degrees of steering wheel play...

New drop arm only took me 4 days to fit... Grr...
