kw to hp ?

this maybe a silly question but my electric motor for my compressor is 2.7kw and i have convereted it into horse power on an online conversion calculator and it come back with 3.7hp does that mean it is 3 or 4hp thanks

Neither, it means it's 3.7 HP. Manufacturers round up figures on spec sheets to optimise appeal for the market, so 3.7HP becomes 4HP in their world !
The other consideration is suitability for domestic supplies, 2.7 KW is about the max possible on 13 amp plug, and even that should be on a 16 amp spur really.

One horsepower is 746 watts, or at least I'm sure it was when I was in college....

Yes, it is 746 watts, which makes the above conversion slightly innaccurate. It is actually 3.61 HP. Practically nothing though.
