Knurling tool

my knurling tool has started to become a P.I.T.A

the pins that hold the wheels on the tool.

you can take them out to change the wheels, but one of them keeps coming out when its in use.

im wondering if its possible to make new pins and use circlips to keep them in place

like so.........



the only problem i can see making these are the groove for the circlip.

would be a very thin tool, my parting tool is 2mm thick.

not sure how thick the circlip would be for that size pin.

any other ideas ?

Or, make the new pins to take a small washer and split pin.

Would washer slightly bigger than the shaft and screw thread in the face of shaft do it?

Just grind a tool. I have dozens of them kicking around as I use circlips a lot. Dead easy to do.

what i think il try is

make two pins like my pic and then see what size circlips i have in the assortment pack
and then see how thick they are.

i do have a brazed TCT parting tool, i wont use anymore.
i could thin that up to a little wider then the circlip...
and use that to put the grooves in.

right a little update.

as the 225pc assortment circlip pack was all mixed up.

like someone had shaken it up. and it was a mess

ive sorted them all out and put them into little zip bags.
but the smallest are 6mm and they are about 0.7mm thick
so no good for this project.
i guess with a 6mm shaft, il need 4mm or 3mm circlip

Just drill your existing pins for a split pin

I'd be looking more like 4.5-5mm myself...

yer i guess going 3mm wouldn't leave much meat on the bone.

thinking about it tiny circlips like that would make it very fiddly when changing the rollers.
wonder if a washer then a R clip would be better.

split pin's are ok, but i think an R clip would be better..

just searching the bay for some smaller ones, as smallest my pack has are 2.5mm x 30mm...

Shouldered bolt sounds like a good idea, if Loctite is out. Maybe even machine them yourself and make one of them with a left hand thread if you're worried about it coming undone.

yer i cant loctite them, coz if i need to change the rollers to finer or courser grade then im stuffed.

il see what i can fine for R clips, if nothing small enough then i might just try the circlip way and see if that works.
if not then try others ways.

right bit of a delay making these pins.

as i got my nephews GF car dropped in my lap to repair for MOT.
so been busy sorting that out.

along with overhauling a petrol lawnmower.

so i turned some bar down to fit the kurl tool



now i need to sort out a 1mm parting tool to put a groove in it
for a Circlip.

then i can part it off and clean the end up
then do the same to the other end of the short bar (that's in the chuck)
and that's the two new pins made

I was watching this video of a guy i subscribe too on youtube, he completely tore down his knurl and re-engineered it. It might be a help.
