knurling in fusion 360?

easiest way to knurl round parts or add knurled texture to flat parts?

ideally after diamond knurl patterns, not a fan of straight knurls.

not something i have had to do before as just add it at the lathe but wanting to printo something that needs to be grippy and scallops arent cutting it on the original part

I cannot speak for fusion, but in FreeCAD it is generally done by taking a triangular shape and subtractively piping it across the surface. On a cylinder you would then polar pattern the single cut. The path for the subtractive operation would need to be helical. For a diamond, you can clone and reflect the left hand pattern to make the right hand one.

In effect, it starts the same as your existing scallops, just much smaller in size and many more in number. Then you tilt them and make a duplicate set with the opposite hand.

In Inventor (which is basically the same as Fusion) you can create a sketch on a plane which which goes through the part in question (ideally aligned to an axis of rotation). Draw the knurling pattern you want and then "revolve" the sketch about the centre / axis of the part you want to add the knurling to. You can do subtractive or additive.

It's a pain in the *rse! - You have to cut (or add) the whole pattern.

Easiest(*) way is using a triangular section 'Helix' tool to cut the first groove; mirror that to get the opposite direction groove for a diamond knurl; then create a circular pattern of both around the part.

*All things are relative - there is a paid-for addin if you want to throw money at it.

i had a feeling it wasnt as simple as there just being a button the opened a knurling panel...

for the amount i currently need to do (maybe 3 pieces) ill do it the hard way for now, if i get to doing it more then i may throw money at it, cheers for the link

for the parts im making first though, i will just turn a mandrel while they are printing and then knurl on the lathe i think...if it wasnt for some funky shaped holes and some trepanning id be doing it on the lathe out of nylon anyway, but im not set up trepanning and the funky hole just looks like a headache in soft material so its getting printed on the weekend providing the printer arrives

More for the experts than to add a useful contribution:

Is it possible to make a generic cylindrical object in Fusion and add a knurl to it, then make it parametric (easy to alter diameter, length and fine-ness of knurling) and save as a base object?

Then if you need something knurled, you open that file, alter the dimensions and add the other features.

That means you only do the hard work once.

ok so knurling wasnt too time intensive, once i had figured out how tight i wanted the pattern it isnt too much of a process

I'm sure you could, but I'm not convinced it would be less work. It's just a PITA compared to something like Creo where you just tell it to knurl the surface and it asks you what pattern you want:

In F360 I think it's more likely that you'd have a component that you'd made (say a thumbscrew) that included a knurl, and if you wanted anything vaguely similar you'd just alter that and save it as something new.

i have done straight knurling in fusion via a circular pattern of small circles, sketched on a constructed plane, then extruded to cut the original piece, just make the pattern really dense and play with the circle sizes for the extrusion, seems to work well but doesnt look like a proper knurl.

i will have a play with the settings more on the weekend when i actually measure the parts to be printed and then draw them up properly, just trying to figure out all the aspects of it i havent done yet to make sure i can knock it up fairly quickly sunday as will only be there an hour or 2 and cant take the part with me as it renders the saw useless if not fitted
