I was trying to avoid too many buried joints. What are the general opinions - Is it likely to be ok or should I cut it and put a join in?

Have you seen the clamps the water companies used when working on them? Basically they squash the pipe flat between two metal tubes. https://www.toolstation.com/squeeze-off-tool/p39855

They can be bought cheaper than this, just the first one google found. MDPE is designed to be squeezed off, a kink may reduce pressure, especially if it is a bad one.
