keyway cutter

guys, what tooling would I need to cut keyways into the bore of a part? I have the X2 mill and a 7 X 10 inch lathe, are there tools available that I could use with those?

How big is the part requiring the keyway? You could mount it in the lathe chuck and grind a tool to suit the keyway width, mount the tool in the tool post to go through the bore. and without lathe even switched on wind the saddle by hand so that the tool cuts the keyway a couple of thou deeper with each pass, Just like you would do it on a slotting machine.

If you have a four jaw you might be able to set it centre of the key way then use a end mill in the head stock? I did one recently and used a dermal to cut the key way out not as good a proper machining but it was only way I could do it!

That's the way I do them gordon, I adapted a 4mm carbide partoff tip tool to sit on its side and do cuts of about 2 thou at a time, Works suprisingly well

I just did a 3/32 slot in a MIG feed roller I made by stacking up 2 bits in a jig saw. They just fit in the saw. Crude but worked.

I have also used a small parting tool like Gordon described.

Keyway,

I Ground an old file up, Locked the headstock up stuck the file in the tool post,and just used the carriage to travel in and out increasing the cross slide a few thou a time, cut a keyway slot in a steering wheel boss in no time at all.no problem at all. Had thought about a mechanical hacksaw blade but it was a bit too thin.
