keyless chuck removal

help. i need to remove a keyless chuck from a drill,
i have removed the screw from the centre of the chuck. which way should the chuck be turned to unscrew it?

Its a normal right hand thread, put a largish allen key in it and give it a sharp crack with a hammer, that usually shifts em.

if the drill has a high torque setting put it on that as it will increase the resistance and make it more lily to budge

I have a DeWalt DW907 drill on which I have broken, and would like to remove, the keyless chuck. I have read how to do this which is to remove the retaining bolt and then to tighten something in the chuck and whack it to spin it off. Two problems (1) the retaining bolt doesn't accept metric nor imperial allen keys and (2) The chuck won't tighten - which is why I want to remove it - so I can't grip anything in it to whack to spin the chuck off. Any suggestions as this is a nice little drill which it would be a shame to bin.

Strange that an allen key won't fit it. Easiest way is to file or grind down the next size up allen key so it fits the bolt. We have sometimes had to do this with cheap Kee Klamp fittings where the allen bolts seem to be some odd foreign size.
If the chuck is broken anyway, i would grip it tightly in a vice and try sharply turning the drill, or try to spin it off with the drill set on its highest torque. Other than that i would weld a bar onto the chuck and giving it a slap.

Beejay99, just a thought, check to make sure they have not used a torx type screw to secure the chuck, an allen key will fit some torx sizes!! but not all.

There are a few American hex sizes that won't be found in an imperial set, you'll either have to buy a full set or butcher another key.
Once you've removed the screw, cut a slot down the plastic on both sides using a hacksaw etc and peel off the keyless chuck casing.
Now use an 18" stilsons and a 2lb lump hammer, works 75% of the time........
Or it's time to carefully shave the chuck off using a grinder.
Hate this job, usually do at least one a week.

Most of the chucks i've removed the lock screws have been torx or philips usually left hand threads, if you cant get anything to fit the heads can be drilled off. If you cant use an allen key in the chuck, use either stilsons or molegrips to grip the chuck and give them a good strike with a rubber mallet, it can take a good few hits before it starts to loosen and there usually normal right hand threads. hth

Going by the the part number and picture half way down this page, its a torx bit not an allen key needed to remove the screw.

Thanks to all of you who replied suggesting it is a torx bit, in particular Swiss Tony who found the part in a catalogue to confirm this. I have just had a look in my tool drawer and I have the correct driver there so after my eggs 'n' bacon I'll have a bash at getting the chuck off...
