Key wont turn in ignition

Evening all , got a peugeot partner van , the key won't turn in the ignition , steering lock is on , tryed a brand new key same effect , it was doing it every now and then until I got home last night , went to pop out again and sat there for 20 minutes , very frustrating , I've put a squirt of oil in , there's a lot of dirt coming out when key is pulled out ! Any ideas ?

Daft question - but you have wobbled the wheel side to side as you try to turn the key?

Yeah done all that , oil in keyhole , it just wont have it , I think it's got to be looked at by mechanic

It's a bit of a "catch 22" and the key probably needs to turn the lock to remove it and clean it.
Had this with my land rover and had to chop off the whole key/ steering lock casting and fit new along with new keys.

Try loads of brake cleaner to get the muck out .
And lubricate with graphite powder , just a little bit .

Had this with my land rover and had to chop off the whole key/ steering lock casting and fit new along with new keys.

Bit of a problem with Citroen/Peugeot keys as they are coded to the BSI so not just a lock swap. I have to be a bit violent giving it a good bit of force sometimes to get the steering lock off our Berlingo.

Had something similar on my van last year. Without warning the key would not turn, spent about an hour and managed to remove the steering lock from the column without removing the steering wheel and airbag. Then removed the switch from the lock so I could start it with a screwdriver but still had to have the key in the lock so it could be detected and allow the van to run. Used it for about a month like that before fitting a replacement barrel so I could keep the original keys rather than having two different keys for it.

If it was a vw I'd say put a battery charger on it.

Some sort of solvent - WD40, brake cleaner, paraffin or similar - followed by be a blast of compressed air would be my thought. Rinse and repeat (literally) until it comes out clean.

Brake CLEANER ! Graphite POWDER !
Only use a bit of graphite powder on the key itself ,
Don't fill up the keyhole with powder or you won't be able to get the key in at all . then , when you try to get all that out you might end up with black graphite powder all over your cream interior ! Not that I'd ever do something daft like that .

Switch cleaner, brake cleaner, even Water Dispersant 40 at a push to get all the crap out. Work the key in and out to agitate the soup too. When clean and dry, graphite powder. You MUST clean it out first, 3 in 1 oil will just gum it up again.

On my bike ignition I stick the straw in WD40 and poke the other end in the ignition lock and just keep squirting till the WD40 comes out clean. Have to do it every couple of years. Of course, it's not so feasible in a van coz of the mess and smell.

I use the graphite spray from Lidl on all my locks and upvc window mechanisms. It's magic. Less an oil than graphite in a light suspension fluid.
