Kawaski KLF300 carburettor

Had to pull apart the carb and in the process, what I later found out to be a heater had corroded connector u/s.
Took a while to find out what the 2 electrical connections where. One is a sensor and the other is heater.I presume they are related?
Also that I can live without them? At least without the heater (£68) New carb inc filter was a cheaper option (£24) than overhauling old with repair kit.

Have you got a picture of failed parts?.

Some carbs have a pilot circuit heater to avoid "carb icing".

I've worked on a lot of Bandit 600's that have a temp sensor switch and 4 carb heaters.

It's shown in this diagram...But in the UK is it really necessary? Note: it's not available.

I'd this it?, looks like a carb heater to me.

Of you do long runs in cold humid conditions the carb can ice up (doesn't have to be freezing cold).

Say you hop on your bike, do 10 Miles on the ring road and then slow down for a junction, if the carb has iced up it would struggle to idle, set off at low revs.

Not the end of the world if not fitted but keep the symptoms in mind.

You used to be able to by an additive to prevent carb icing in winter.

The sensor is ok, it unscrewed from the old carb, but the heater was bonded in, with what I presume is thermal cement. Plenty of that, but not the heater bulb. It disintegrated. There should be plenty of heat off the engine to warm air intake?
It doesn't look like it's been working for a lo-ooong time.Providing this Chinese carb works, then it is a much cheaper option than buying a repair kit + an inline filter separately.
I only started work on it because the carb was flooding out of the overflow pipe. Stripped carb and a lot of gunge in float chamber. Wanted an inline filter. Only use it on the land, not road legal.

Unlikely unless we're snowed in.....and that hasn't happened in 10 yrs or so. What I was concerned about was whether it affected the overall electronics? I.e ..won't run without it? It's becoming more obvious that it isn't a vital component.
First time I've ever come a across electrical connections on a carb in 60yrs of tinkering with them.

Next I have the footrest to re-fabricate (corroded) and trail arm bush to replace (had to drill seized bolt out)

Just make sure the 12v supply wire is well insulated, secure and not likely to short on anything.

I think the most complicated ones I've done are ZZR-1200.


Cooant fed carb heaters, throttle position sensor and 4 power jet solenoids!. Went well for ir though!.

You'd think but the SV650 I had was almost unrideable in cool damp weather, exactly as @Keithmac says come off a dual carriageway and the next stop the thing would not pull away without full revs and lots of clutch slipping!
Dangerous really but Suzuki weren't interested in supplying me with the optional carb heaters at the time.

The chinese carb worked straight out of the box 'straight to wok' ? Corroded footrest is proving a really pain.

Back in the late 1980’s, my Kawasaki GPZ600R had a manufacturer's safety recall regarding carburettor icing.

I had never experienced it and didn’t really want some kind of retro-fit kit installed.

From what I can recall, the icing wasn’t always associated with really cold weather.

No it was from about + 3° and damp moist air, the ice formed in the carb body due to the Venturi effect thus buggering up the settings.
It happened on my two stroke RD125 a couple of times but in this case the carb slide stuck open...

Yes it doesn't have to be freezing cold to experience carb icing.

Some air cooled scooters have a shroud over the carb body and a pipe supplying warm air, some have coolant blocks and some electrical heaters.

Can't remember seeing any carb heaters on 1970's era bikes though.

In the 60's there was none on my old Lambretta TV175.....The carb on the KLF300 is thermally isolated from the block by the flexible intake, Perhaps that's the reason?
