I don't know, the liner will accomodate 1.0mm no problem. Is that too big for 0.6? I'll buy a roll of 0.8 and see if that is any different. (I should of bought 0.8 today but I thought i'd try 0.6 to see how it is.

Can any welder be set up to purge with gas before and after pulling the trigger? i seem to get the odd time where i get porous starts and ends to welds, but not all the time.

It depends, mine is a cheaper model with a valve block inside the torch assembly, the trigger has 2 small cams on the trigger part. One for the gas valve, the other which pushes on a switch to activate the welders current and wire feed.
From here you can make the adjustments. In my case I shaved off a little bit of the plastic cam that does the power switch meaning there is a little more travel required to get that working, by which time your gas should be flowing.
Just me tinkering around again.

Ah ok, mines just got a switch for the trigger, might see if theres any wires that can be swapped inside...!

Just be careful, do you know what you are looking at/for ? Theres a chance of a nasty electric shock mate. Take pictures first, post them up on here and ask before doing. ( Unless you are an electrician, or you have done this before)

Just had a closer look at the wire feeder. Its slipping, despite the wire travelling through the liner hitch free and freely. I've screwed the tensioner down as hard as it goes and it still slips. I removed the rollers and cleaned and degreased them, popped them back in and it still slips... The rollers are 0.6 as so is the wire. When it welds it puts down a ok'ish beads with the C02 especially for a slipping wire feed.
I'm going to use 0.8mm wire from now on., So does anyone want a 700gm roll of 0.6mm wire cheap?

Update on the conversion:
The polarity is now set correctly, had to be very careful inside that machine!
not much room to move around since the components are so tightly packed in,, one slip with the wrench could mean damage..
I've done a fair bit of welding with it today, started out with my brothers holy exhaust manifold on his bike. Its split and rusted all round the seams... Noisy!
The afternoon has consisted on me making a small caddy to mount to the back of the welder to secure the gas bottle in place.
The welds aren't the most beautiful, as the cheaper migs have the problem of not having a seperate power supply feeding juice to the wire drive motor, thus the wire speed isn't always consistant.
At least on these welds the gas coverage is seen to me more than adequate, and thats something that not always possible with those disposables!
Need to post pics of some of these welds. The wire is SIP's 0.8mm wire. Some surprising results with this low grade wire.

Nice one try and shorten your arc length a bit as it makes for a hotter weld pool as the wire is burning closer to the metal rather than on top which i found helped me when i first had my clarke 100 a few years ago

They're still way too tall and very cold, the edges are barely fused.
Gas coverage is fine but It looks like you've got the torch canted over too far which is giving you the vee shaped ridges, try holding it more upright.
Keep at it, you're improving all the time.

Its not surprising you guys slate hobby migs, they are tricky to get good results from. I'll burn some more wire tommorow and put your tips to good use

The conversion is completed!
This conversion project is now complete!
Finished off my gas cylinder mountings, and they are neatly and securely attatched onto the welder with some 10mm M6 thread nut & bolts. I've washed them over with some enamel paint to deter the rust until I purchase some black paint to finish it off.
The Gas cylinder fits snugly into the brackets and doesn't have a chance to move in any way. Safe and snug. Gas hose has been shortened to allow less use of gas to travel its way to the torch ( less line to purge).
Polarity is set correctly, everything is good. Welds well too.
Its quite packed inside the welders case, but it has never tripped its thermal overload yet..

you're going to cry when you realise how much it's gonna cost ya with those disposables. Nice conversion though.

Won't really be using the mig extensively, just for small patch repairs to the ford fiesta. Unfortunately, very little welding comes my way out of work to justify renting a BOC bottle. I do have the arc welder for the bigger tasks to supplement aswell should I not have gas at that point.
I'm pleased with the outcome of my little project.
