Hi i recently brought a cut 40 plasma cutter

And it mentions gas on the instructions i am confused by this as i thought they only used compressed air and electric to work.
I also just brought a Air compressor from argos linked to here
What i need to know is, do i need gas? or was it just refering to the compressed air?
And will the plasma cutter and air compressor work together?

Just needs compressed air.Gas is probably a translation cock up when going from Chinese to the Benny Hill English all chinese products seem to come with.That compressor will work with it but you might find it cutting in a lot to keep the air coming.

That air compressor looks a bit small, plasma cutters use a lot of air.
If you have long runs, get an old BIG propane bottle standing upside down, & plumb in line as a second tank. Filter the air before the plasma.
If you have lots of work, get a biger air compressor .

The compresser had just been reduced from 80 pounds thats why i brought it :P
How do i tell the PSI of it?

i used the cut 40 with such a compressor, worked, but had the compressor had a hard time. The power line voltage dipped quite a lot during cutting+compressor startup, sometimes enough to disturb the arc of the plasmacutter.

Yes, any condensate drains into pipework (easy todrain & filter) no new holes in tank, biggest job is straping bottle to a wall.
If you need lots of reserve, have a row of them.

Do make sure every last bit of gas is emptied from the bottle, especially if you're feeding it to a plasma cutter

Im not sure that its a good idea to use a propane cylinder for compressed air, I know its done And Ive seen it many times, but gas cylinders are designed to contain gas. Air receivers are manufactured under strict control to comply with compressed air regulations, most certainly it wouldn't be allowed in an industrial environment, and if you had an explosion and were lucky enough to survive it then your insurance would likely be invalid. Ive seen the results of a pressure test on a 40g gallon steel drum that exploded with just 20 psi in it, It should have been filled with water for a safe hydraulic test, but the guy thought he would save some time and just use air, one big big bang later and he had learned a lesson for life, luckily no one was hurt,
As an alternative to a gas cylinder look for some lorry air tanks.

Gas cylinders are designed & manufactured under stricter control than air receivers & tested to higher pressure,(28.9bar=419psi).

To use as Air receivers, They should be gas free.

All presure vessels should have a regular hydraulic test.

Your man with the 40g gallon steel drum was very stupid & lucky. I've seen a 2ft hole in a brickwall from a lorry tyre going bang.

Oh and does the air compresser need to be set to a number?

Again it should all be in the manuals. If the cutter overheats or the pressure is too low it will cut out automatically.

My Clarke plasma has a its own regulator which I've set to about 7psi.
